Dentists Armstrong County, Armstrong Dental Care Getting a teeth whitening treatment is a great way to improve your smile. The teeth naturally change colour over time, and stains can accumulate on the teeth. Teeth whitening is the process of whitening the teeth by chemically or physically removing these stains. The treatment is performed either in a dentist's office or at home. There are three main whitening procedures: dental bleaching, over-the-counter whitening and whitening strips.

The chemical reaction between hydrogen peroxide and chromogens, compounds with darker shades, accomplishes teeth whitening. These compounds are composed of large organic molecules with conjugated double bonds. Over time, these molecules oxidize, breaking down the double bonds and causing the tooth colour to change.

The whitening process may involve multiple applications of bleaching agents. The amount of time required for each application may vary, depending on the severity of the discoloration. Professional treatments are usually more effective than over-the-counter products. Most over-the-counter products contain a small amount of bleaching agent and do not keep the active ingredient on the teeth for an extended period. Ask your dentist if you are still determining how long the treatment will last.

A whitening treatment usually takes a few days to a few weeks, depending on the severity of the discoloration. For mild discoloration, an over-the-counter product may be all that is needed. For darker shades, however, more effort may be required.

Teeth whitening can be done at home using bleaching trays. These trays are custom-fitted to fit the teeth. The bleaching solution is then placed in the trays and left to sit for a specified time. When the teeth are white, the trays can be removed. If you do not have a custom-fitted tray, the bleaching solution may leak, burn the gums and cause other problems.

Some products will also bleach extrinsic stains. These are stains caused by food colouring and other compounds. For example, coffee and red wine can stain teeth. If you drink coffee or red wine regularly, consider getting a teeth whitening treatment.

The type of whitening you choose will depend on the types of stains you have. If you have intrinsic stains, such as gum disease, you should consult a dentist first. Choosing the right whitening method can take time and effort, as several options are available.
